What is Mechanical Engineering?

Engineering is a popular and a very profitable field of study; one that many students take up. This scientific field of study is further divided into three primary segments: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

In simple terms, Mechanical Engineering deals with mechanics, i.e. the design, production, and operation of machinery. Mechanical Engineering deals primarily with the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of machines and mechanical systems. These mechanical systems can be part of or in used in a multitude of different fields, hence making Mechanical engineering one of the broadest the engineering disciplines; it is also one of the oldest.

What is an accident?

No matter how safe one it, accidents do tend to happen. An accident is an unintentional incident that may or may not result in injury. It is an undesirable, incidental and unplanned event. However, in most circumstances, an accident is an incident that could have been avoided if proper steps had been taken or proper procedures had been followed.

What do you mean by First Aid?

Regardless of how careful one is, accidents tend to happen, and these accidents may result in injury. In case, this happens, it is necessary that the injured person receive immediate care. However, it is not always possible for a doctor to be present or for the person to be transported to a medical facility. In these cases, First Aid may be the difference between a minor injury and a major injury.

First Aid is basically aid that should be administered first. It is an assistance that should be provided in to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury. First Aid steps may help minimize or limit the damage until proper medical assistance can be provided. Properly administered First Aid can even help ease future recovery.

First Aid may include steps to stop bleeding, administer to cuts and bruises, salve wounds and burns, and even administer CPR in case the person is not breathing.

What safety precautions should be observed while working in the workshop?

A Workshop is full of dangers and hazards that can result in accidents and injury is the rules and safety precautions are not followed. Hence, safety precautions should be followed at all times.

While each workshop may have their own set of rules, here are some general rules that should be followed in nearly all workshops:

  • No Food or Drink
  • No working under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication
  • Wear appropriate clothing
  • Wear safety equipment at all times
  • Check the equipment and machines before working on them
  • Notify the supervisor of your arrival and the machine/area you will be working in
  • All chemicals should be checked thoroughly before use
  • Keep clear of any person operating tools and machinery
  • Do not talk to anyone operating electrical equipment and machinery
  • Work area should always be kept tidy
  • Clean up any spills immediately
  • Wash up after using equipment and materials
  • Do not play/joke around in the work area
  • Report any damage to machines/equipment
What are the precautions to be taken to avoid fire?

Every mechanical workshop will have some safety rules in place in order to avoid accidents, this includes fire precautions to avoid a fire. Here are some precautions that can be taken in order to avoid a fire:

  • Wear and use safety equipment at all times
  • No smoking or drinking
  • Wear appropriate clothing that covers the skin
  • Avoid loose clothing and loose hair
  • Wear closed toe shoes; avoid open toe shoes
  • Keep the floor clean and free from oil and other slippery materials
  • Avoid playing, jostling or goofing around inside the workshop
  • Put all unnecessary items and rejected items in scrap box
  • Learn everything about the machine before starting
  • Follow safety procedure on each machine
  • Never store inflammable materials inside or around the shop
  • Never play with electricity, fire, parts with sharp edges, etc.
  • Keep fire buckets with sand ready for use in the workshop
  • Switches and other electrical parts must be made of fireproof material
  • Carbon dioxide gas should be place at required points in special containers
  • Fire extinguishers of suitable type should be placed at accessible places
What are the methods of extinguishing fire?

A fire, if not properly handled can be deadly or at least cause severe damage. The best way to protect oneself from the damages of fire is to avoid the occurrence of the fire in the first place; however, accidents are bound to happen. In the situations where a fire is already ignited, the best bet way is to safely and securely extinguish the fire. A fire can be extinguished via three ways;

  • Starvation – separating or removing the burning material from near the fire will deprive the fire of its fuel source. If it does not have fuel it will die out.
  • Blanketing – preventing the flow of air to the fire will deprive the fire of oxygen which is essential for a fire to burn. If it does not get air or oxygen, it will die out.
  • Cooling – cooling the temperature of the burning materials will lower the heat and make the fire must less dangerous and it will eventually die out.
What is a Drawing?

In the simplest terms, a drawing is a graphical representation of something. Technically, it is a graphical representation of a real thing to define and specify the shape and size of a particular object by means of lines.

What is Engineering Drawing?

The simplest way to say this is that an Engineering Drawing is a’ drawing which is worked out an engineer for the engineering purpose.’ In order to be more precise, it can be said that an engineering drawing is a drawing that shows the internal structural design and component of an object, which can be used to study, repair, or improve the original object.
